SIDS Network of Kentucky
OUR MISSION & HISTORY
The SIDS Network of Kentucky, Inc. is a statewide not-for-profit organization 501(c)(3) dedicated to:
* Supporting family members and others who have been touched by the tragedy of a
SIDS or other infant death,
* Educating the public and professionals about infant mortality reduction and
bereavement support, and
*
Eliminating Sudden Infant Death Syndrome by supporting research.
The
SIDS Network of Kentucky was started in the early 1980's by parents who provide
support services to other SIDS parents and caregivers. When the family moved
from the state, a leadership gap needed to be filled. A few families and board
members maintained the chapter and continued to provide support services and
educational programs. The chapter began to grow in members and services and
graduated to an affiliate of the national SIDS Alliance.
The board of trustees hired its first executive director in 1997.
In
Spring 2000 the board of trustees crafted a new mission statement to reflect our
services to families who have infants who die in Kentucky during their first
year:
In 2006 after it was evident that there was not enough funding to keep
someone on the payroll full time the board decided to function without an
executive director. The volunteer only board works close with volunteers in
funding raising, policy development, educational programs, and family support.
Our goals will remain the same. We will continue to educate the public and professionals about infant mortality. We also offer support groups across Kentucky to families who have suffered loss of an infant. We have joined forces with several hospitals and we provide them with brochures on SIDS and how to reduce the risk of SIDS to each new mother who delivers a baby. We hope to eventually reach every new mother in the state of Kentucky.
